Hier haben wir also das erste offizielle Studioalbum von Total Negation, welches von vielen schon heiß erwartet wurde. Positive Resonanzen beim bisher einzigen und ersten Demo des Deutschen waren nämlich außergewöhnlich häufig vertreten.
Ich persönlich war allerdings nicht übermäßig angetan, da ich weder etwas Neuartiges noch Besonderes ausmachen konnte. Ein gutes, aber lange nicht außergewöhnliches Demo aus meiner Sicht. Dennoch war ich sehr gespannt, wie „Zeitenwende“ denn nun klingen würde. Das Resultat befriedigt mich letztendlich äußerst. Zwar ist auch hier nichts völlig Innovatives drin, sondern einfach wehmütiger Black Metal, doch ist dieser gut aufgebaut und gespielt. Auch in Sachen Tiefgang – was meines Erachtens nach das Wichtigste in diesem Musikbereich ist – kommt der Hörer nicht zu kurz. Die Riffs tragen zum Großteil einen sehr schwermütigen, traurigen Charakter durch die Stücke, mutieren hin und wieder aber auch mal zu epischen Kolossen, zumindest ab und an während der Erhöhung der musikalischen Schlagzahl. Überhaupt wirken die Riffs in meinen Augen viel ausgearbeiteter als bei vielen anderen Formationen dieses Genres. Es eigenständig zu nennen, wäre wohl übertrieben formuliert, definitiv geht Total Negation mit der Saitenarbeit aber nicht in der Masse unter. Wie weiter oben schon angedeutet, sind auch die Tracks nicht völlig vorhersehbar aufgebaut, sondern durchaus abwechslungsreich und untypisch interessant strukturiert. Erwähnenswert ist wohl noch, dass das Album aus lediglich vier Liedern besteht, welche im Schnitt aber um die zehn Minuten das Trommelfell beschallen.
Wer guten Black Metal im depressiven Gewand sucht, sollte hier zuschlagen. Sicher gehört „Zeitenwende“ zu den sehr viel besseren Werken dieses Stils.

To the most conoisseurs of lugubrious tones Total Negation should still stand in connection with good memories. But even those, whose nerves are usually tortured by the always recurring jubilation around diverse depressive projects, recall the already then promising German project in the sense of ecstasy.
Disputing against all expectations, yes, even exceeding them, “Zeitenwende”, however, doesn’t continue at the point where the small but fine demo drew the final stroke. Namely, the scale of newly set standards has been lifted many times higher now; in the first winks one believes only hardly that this is de facto the work of a one-man-band recently still operating on a basis of development.
Directly, the starting frequency reveals a lot of the assumedly big change of the musical direction, since one seems to be tired of the slow and profanised rhythm of every grief-chapel and opens the quadripartite cycle with almost furious verve, for then by dint of a virtually genius bridge flowing into a more cumbersome tempo. All the charm of this now appropriately produced debut lives from suchlike dynamic interplays, which guarantee not only a manifold and thoroughly complex structure, but likewise create a vast field of opportunities and variations regarding expressiveness, and thus one is considerably at pains to adequately make use of this space.
With great tactfulness and a generally much matured sense of stirring melodies, which are always accentuated by high-tone conduction-plays, “Zeitenwende” pushes forward – without any worth-mentioning cliché-persistence. In this connection, the discretely worked in appearance of effect-covered, spherical sounds, which on the one hand are rooted in the use of a keyboard and on the other in the creative handling of stringed instruments, is especially attractive. Foremost according to atmospheric issues this move proofs to be extraordinarily efficient and beside the symbiosis of characteristic megrim and a silent morbid world of fiction decisively contributes to omnipresent profundity.
However, apart from the musical qualities of the album lies a further, eminently important aspect, which almost perishes by virtue of its
obviousness: Total Negation wanders beyond many conventions, loosen from the cliché-impregnated and primitive customs of the self-proclaimed suicide-elite, fixated on the perfection of the own expression. One comes pretty close to that.

Wiedergänger, der kreative Kopf hinter TOTAL NEGATION, bringt mit „Zeitenwende“ seinen zweiten Streich unter die Leute. Zu hören gibt es vier schwarzmetallische Songs mit leichten Doom-Tendenzen und typisch "suizidalem" Jammergesang. Eine Mischung, die mir schon auf dem Vorgänger "A Life Led by Sorrow and Not by Myself" sehr gefiel. Wiedergänger hat nun seinen Stil ausgebaut: es gibt mehr schnelle Riffattacken, allgemein ist das Liedgut wesentlich abwechslungsreicher geworden, wobei die wirklich packenden Stellen zumeist jene sind, in denen moll-lastige Doom-Gitarrenwände auf weinerliche, wehklagende Leads treffen und unterstützt vom charakterstarken Gesang Wiedergängers ordentlich Atmosphäre heraufbeschwören. Natürlich, es könnte noch besser produziert sein, und manche Parts zünden dann doch nicht so ganz. Da es sich hierbei jedoch erst um die zweite Veröffentlichung aus dem Hause TOTAL NEGATION handelt, ist das eher zweitrangig. Zweifellos hat dieser Herr Talent und jeder, der dieser Art von Black Metal etwas abgewinnen kann, sollte mal reinhören. Hier ist Grosses im Kommen!
